The top lawmaker in the Senate has criticized a Florida judge’s recent decision regarding former President Trump’s handling of classified documents.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has ] criticized Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of felony charges against former President Trump. Schumer described the ruling as “breathtakingly misguided” and called for an immediate appeal.
Schumer added, “It is wrong in the law and must be appealed immediately.” He questioned Judge Cannon’s ability to handle the case impartially, suggesting, “This is further evidence that Judge Cannon cannot handle this case impartially and must be reassigned.”
Judge Cannon, appointed by then-President Donald Trump, ruled that the case should be dismissed because the special counsel’s appointment violated the Constitution. She argued that no legal statute grants the attorney general the authority to appoint a federal officer with the extensive prosecutorial powers of Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Former President Trump faced 40 charges related to the mishandling of classified documents and obstructing their retrieval after his presidency. This controversial ruling came just as the Republican National Convention began in Milwaukee.

In a statement following the dismissal, Trump said, “As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events on Saturday, this dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts — The January 6th Hoax in Washington, D.C., the Manhattan D.A.’s Zombie Case, the New York A.G. Scam, Fake Claims about a woman I never met (a decades old photo in a line with her then husband does not count), and the Georgia “Perfect” Phone Call charges. The Democrat Justice Department coordinated ALL of these Political Attacks, which are an Election Interference conspiracy against Joe Biden’s Political Opponent, ME. Let us come together to END all Weaponization of our Justice System, and Make America Great Again!”
