Judge Arthur Engoron, who imposed a $464 million judgment on former President Donald Trump, has refused to recuse himself from Trump’s civil fraud trial. This comes after Trump’s legal team accused the judge of having improper discussions with a third party about the case.

What Trump’s lawyers are arguing: Trump’s lawyers argue that Judge Arthur Engoron should recuse himself from the civil fraud trial due to an alleged improper discussion with lawyer Adam Leitman Bailey. Bailey has admitted to approaching Engoron to offer unsolicited advice on Trump’s case. Bailey reportedly talked to the judge about case law and how he could “get it right” with Trump’s case. Though Bailey claimed the conversation was 90 seconds and did not mention Trump by name, he implied they were clearly discussing Trump’s case, saying, “Well, obviously we weren’t talking about the Mets.”
