Authorities in Pennsylvania have identified the man who was killed in Saturday’s shooting at a rally for former president Donald Trump as Corey Comperatore, a father of two daughters who died trying to protect his family.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke with Comperatore’s wife, who asked him to share that “Corey died a hero.” She recounted how Comperatore dove on top of his family to shield them from gunfire, which erupted early in the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Shapiro described Comperatore as a firefighter, a churchgoer, and a proud “girl dad.”

Neighbors of Comperatore spoke highly of him to various news outlets. Hayden, who had known him for about 20 years, mentioned their political differences but emphasized their amicable relationship: “He knew I was a Biden fan, I knew he’s a Trump fan. But we never let that come in between us. We still said ‘hi’ to each other, we still talked to each other. Some people take it to the extreme.”
Comperatore’s sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, expressed her grief on Facebook, stating, “The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most.” She added that her younger brother had “so much life left to experience” and that his death feels like a “terrible nightmare.”
In an additional statement, Governor Shapiro said, “Last night was shocking for this community and for this commonwealth, and I know, for this country. Political disagreements can never, ever be addressed through violence. Disagreements are OK, but we need to use a peaceful political process to settle those differences.”
President Joe Biden extended his condolences to Comperatore’s family, noting, “He was a father. He was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired. He lost his life. God loved him.”
