Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has visited former President Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida following the conclusion of the NATO summit with President Biden.
According to Orbán, the two discussed “peace mission 5.0” in relation to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Orbán shared his enthusiasm about the meeting on social media, saying, “It was an honor to visit President Trump at Mar-a-Lago today. We discussed ways to make peace. The good news of the day: he’s going to solve it!” Trump responded on Truth Social, highlighting the need for peace: “There must be PEACE, and quickly. Too many people have died in a war that should have never started!”
This meeting marked the second occasion this year that Trump has hosted Orbán at Mar-a-Lago. Orbán Despite facing criticism from some within his country, Orbán remains a close ally of Trump and is admired by many US conservatives. Earlier in March, Orbán praised Trump and noted their shared views on the Ukraine war, indicating that Trump would not support Kyiv financially if re-elected.
Digging Deeper:
Some NATO leaders have been critical of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán due to his close ties with Russia and his stance on the Ukraine conflict. Orbán’s government has repeatedly opposed NATO and EU proposals to provide military aid to Ukraine, fearing it would escalate the conflict. This position contrasts sharply with the majority of NATO allies who support Ukraine’s defense efforts against Russian aggression. Additionally, Orbán’s reluctance to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership, despite promising support, has frustrated many NATO members.
