Former President Donald Trump is set to host Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida next week.
Initially reported by The New York Times and confirmed by a source familiar with the plans, the meeting aligns with Trump’s efforts to secure his position within the GOP ahead of Super Tuesday. Viktor Orbán, having requested the meeting, is looking to build his relationship with Trump.
Trump has openly commended Orbán at various campaign rallies, highlighting the Hungarian Prime Minister as a significant conservative figure in the US. He previously said, “There is a great man, a great leader in Europe — Viktor Orbán,” praising Orbán’s leadership and acknowledging the criticism he faces for his strongman approach. Orbán’s influence extends beyond political meetings; he has participated in prominent conservative events such as the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas in 2022 and was interviewed by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
Despite admiration from certain conservative circles, Orbán’s governance has faced international scrutiny. Critics label his administration as “authoritarian,” pointing to its crackdown on dissent, migration, and the curtailing of LGBTQ rights. Orbán’s stance against what he terms “woke culture” was notably expressed during his address at CPAC Europe last year.
