During a speech kicking off the start of NATO’s summit in Washington DC, President Biden said Russia was “failing” in its war against Ukraine and NATO was unified because of Russia’s actions.

Biden said, “Together, we built a global coalition to stand with Ukraine. Make no mistake, Russia is failing in this war. More than two years into [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s war of choice, its losses are staggering. More than 350,000 Russian troops, dead, wounded … many young people have left Russia because they no longer see a future in Russia.”

President Biden continued, “Ukraine can and will stop Putin. Russia will not prevail. Ukraine will prevail.” He added, “Our message to Moscow and the world is clear: Our support for Ukraine is strong and unwavering.”

Biden’s address followed a Russian strike in Ukraine that resulted in 35+ deaths, including four people at a children’s hospital in Kyiv. In response, Biden announced that Ukraine would receive five additional air defense systems to bolster its defenses against further Russian attacks. President Zelenskyy praised the move on social media, noting that it would help stop “Russian aggression.”

Ukraine & NATO:
While Ukraine is unlikely to achieve NATO membership this year due to the implications of ongoing conflict with Russia, the alliance is expected to affirm its commitment to Ukraine’s future membership and enhance its support for the country’s defense. In addition, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg indicated that the summit would likely result in an agreement to consolidate military support for Ukraine into a command post in Germany staffed by NATO personnel.
