The State Department has confirmed the death of a US embassy staffer in Ukraine and has said that an investigation has shown no signs of foul play.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller announced on Wednesday that a US government employee, who was working under the chief of mission authority in Kyiv, was found dead. The individual’s body was discovered on Tuesday at the Hilton Hotel in Kyiv, according to reports from local law enforcement sources cited by online newspaper Strana UA and Ukrainian news outlet New Voice (NV).

Addressing the situation during a press briefing, Miller confirmed the staffer’s death and extended condolences to family and friends. He emphasized that there was no indication of foul play and dismissed the conspiracy theories that had begun to emerge. “I hate to even bring this up, but I know sometimes conspiracy theories spin out of control … that it is our understanding he died of natural causes and there is no sign of foul play,” Miller said.
According to Ukrainian media, “Yesterday at about 11:00 a.m. the body of an attaché of the US Embassy was found in a hotel room. No signs of violence were found on the body. The man arrived in Ukraine on June 15.” The same source also mentioned that, according to medical data provided by the US Embassy, the man had high cholesterol.
Reports from Strana UA and NV corroborated the State Department’s statement, indicating that there were no signs of bodily injury and that the hotel room door was locked from the inside.
