The Supreme Court has rejected a push by anti-abortion advocates to restrict access to the abortion pill mifepristone, allowing it to remain widely available.

In a unanimous decision, the court ruled that the group of anti-abortion doctors lacked the legal standing to challenge the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decisions that made the pill easier to access. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the court, acknowledged the plaintiffs’ strong objections to abortion and the FDA’s regulations but clarified that their concerns did not constitute a federal case.

President Joe Biden reacted to the news, saying, “The fight for reproductive freedom continues,” especially after the overturning of Roe v. Wade two years ago. He added, “It does not change the fact that the right for a woman to get the treatment she needs is imperiled if not impossible in many states.”

Two Different views:
Erin Hawley, a lawyer for Alliance Defending Freedom, said, “We are disappointed that the Supreme Court did not reach the merits of the FDA’s lawless removal of commonsense safety standards for abortion drugs.” Marjorie Dannenfeiser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, said, “Joe Biden and the Democrats are hell-bent on forcing abortion on demand any time for any reason, including DIY mail-order abortions, on every state in the country.”

Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, praised the court’s decision, saying, ” Thank goodness the Supreme Court rejected this unwarranted attempt to curtail access to medication abortion, but the fact remains that this meritless case should never have gotten this far.” Danco Laboratories, the manufacturer of mifepristone, also praised the ruling for upholding the FDA’s drug approval process.
