A lawsuit filed by eight former SpaceX employees accuses the company and its CEO, Elon Musk, of wrongful termination following their complaints about workplace sexual harassment.
The lawsuit, filed in California, alleges that Elon Musk “engaged in sexually harassing conduct and [the] creation of a hostile work environment personally.” It also claims that Musk would retaliate against employees “opposing the discrimination, harassment, and hostile work environment they observed.” Additionally, the lawsuit states that eight employees were dismissed after circulating an “open letter” within SpaceX criticizing Musk’s public behavior as a “distraction” and “embarrassment.”
Lawyers for the defendants also reference a video in their possession that has “SpaceX’s upper management, including Vice President of Human Resources (HR) Brian Bjelde, President and CEO Gwynne Shotwell, and Elon Musk that mocks and makes light of sexual misconduct and banter.”
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell defended the company, describing the allegations as misleading and arguing that SpaceX thoroughly investigates harassment claims and takes appropriate action. She added, “Elon is one of the best humans I know.”
The lawsuit comes as the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) complaint against SpaceX for alleged labor law violations related to the firings. The NLRB case and the related SpaceX lawsuit challenging the NLRB’s constitutionality are still pending.
