Former President Donald Trump has confirmed that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton would be a strong choice to run the Justice Department in a future Trump administration.
In an interview with Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth during the National Rifle Association convention, Trump expressed his willingness to consider Paxton for the role of attorney general. “We have a lot of people who want that one and will be very good at it. But he’s a very talented guy,” Trump said.
Trump also referred to Paxton’s acquittal in last year’s impeachment by the Texas House as a shared victory. He stated, “I fought for him when he had the difficulty, and we won. He had some people really after him, and I thought it was very unfair. He’s been a good attorney general.” The mutual support between Trump and Paxton has been evident, with Paxton attending Trump’s hush money trial in New York to show his solidarity.
Paxton’s political battles have been notable. He was acquitted of charges alleging bribery and abuse of office, with Trump taking partial credit for the outcome. The former president wrote on Truth Social that his intervention “saved Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton from going down at the hands of Democrats and some Republicans.” Trump had even threatened political retaliation against Republicans who supported the impeachment.
Paxton has faced various allegations, including accusations that he used his office to attack the political enemies of his donors. Despite these challenges, Paxton has maintained his job, which Trump and other Republican leaders support.
