According to a report released by the House Select Committee on China’s Communist Party, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has played a significant role in the global fentanyl crisis by subsidizing the production and export of materials used in the drug’s manufacture.

Committee Chair Mike Gallagher and ranking member Raja Krishnamoorthi, this financial support has come in the form of tax rebates. The investigation, which lasted several months, analyzed data from Chinese websites, government documents, and narcotics companies, revealing a direct financial link between the CCP and the fentanyl trade.

The report further highlighted that the CCP provides monetary grants and awards to companies involved in trafficking fentanyl materials. Notably, several of these companies are owned by the CCP, including a government prison implicated in human rights abuses. These entities not only engage in the drug trade but also contribute significantly to the production and distribution of fentanyl and other synthetic narcotics.

The committee’s findings also criticize the People’s Republic of China’s law enforcement agencies for their lack of cooperation with US efforts to combat drug trafficking. Instead of investigating and prosecuting traffickers, Chinese security services have reportedly refused to work alongside US law enforcement, exacerbating the issue.

This comes as the impact of fentanyl is severe in the United States, with more than 200 Americans dying each day from overdoses. This drug is now the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-45, affecting millions.
