Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to support Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
During a meeting with 50 defense leaders at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Secretary Austin said, “The United States will not let Ukraine fail. This coalition will not let Ukraine fail. And the free world will not let Ukraine fail. Ukraine won’t back down. And neither will the United States.”
This meeting between top defense officials worldwide came shortly after the United States decided to allocate $300 million in contract savings to aid Ukraine. It marked the first such assistance since December amidst worsening battlefield conditions.
Despite challenges, including a stalemate in Congress over additional funding for Ukraine, the US provided military aid by utilizing contract savings for a “one-time shot.” This method allowed for the immediate deployment of Pentagon supplies to Ukraine, with plans to replenish US military resources.
The deadlock on providing Ukraine $60 billion worth of aid is tied to a $95 billion bill that also includes funds for Israel, Gaza, and Taiwan.
