Royal Caribbean has suspended its cruise stops at Labadee, Haiti, due to increasing concerns about gang violence and political instability in the country.
In a statement, Royal Caribbean said, “Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we’re temporarily suspending our visits to Labadee for our entire fleet. We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team.”
This decision comes after safety warnings issued by the US government, which recently advised all American citizens in Haiti to evacuate. Additionally, the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince evacuated nonessential personnel and deployed Marines for protection.
Haiti’s political and security environment has deteriorated rapidly in the last two weeks, especially after gang violence surged and Prime Minister Ariel Henry left the country, failing to return due to the violence and airport closures. With gangs controlling a significant portion of Port-au-Prince and the Prime Minister announcing his resignation, various countries are now advising their citizens to leave the country immediately.
