House Democrats led by Representative Jim McGovern have initiated a strategy to bypass Republican opposition and secure a vote on a significant foreign aid package currently stalled in Congress.
This package, previously approved by the Senate, earmarks $95 billion for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and humanitarian aid in Gaza. Achieving this vote through a bypass would require McGovern to obtain 218 signatures on a “discharge petition.”
Congressman Pete Aguilar said, “What we are asking our colleagues — Democrats and Republicans — is to sign the discharge petition that will bring to the floor the Senate national security bipartisan supplemental. That is the fastest and easiest way to solve this issue.”
The status of the foreign aid package:
Despite the Senate’s endorsement of the bill, which had substantial bipartisan support, including a vote from Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, it has faced resistance in the House, particularly from Speaker Mike Johnson, due to concerns over border security measures.
What’s going on in the House:
Some Democrats express reservations about military aid to Israel without stringent human rights conditions, while some moderate Republicans have demanded more robust border security measures as part of any aid package.
