The US Embassy in Russia has issued a security alert about a possible extremist attack targeting large gatherings in Moscow.
“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and US citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours,” stated the alert released on Thursday. This advisory came shortly after the Kremlin’s intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service (FSS), announced it had thwarted an attack on a synagogue in the capital by a group reportedly linked to a militant Sunni Muslim organization.

The planned attack on the synagogue was attributed to an Islamic State cell operating from Russia’s Kaluga region, intending to use firearms for the assault. The FSS stated that Russian special forces had “neutralized” the threat by engaging the militants, seizing their ammunition, weapons, and an “improvised explosive device” in the process.
Although it remains uncertain whether the alert and the prevented synagogue attack are connected, the embassy’s warning advises heightened vigilance. Citizens are encouraged to stay away from crowded places, remain observant of their surroundings, and stay updated through local media outlets.
