The Pentagon is investigating reports that two Cuban doctors, kidnapped in Somalia by the militant group al-Shabaab, were killed in a US drone strike.
Doctors Assel Herrera Correa and Landy Rodriguez Hernandez were abducted in April 2019, and recent claims suggest their deaths occurred during a February 15 drone attack in Jilib, Somalia. The validity of these claims currently remains unverified.
In a statement, Maj. Pete Nguyen confirmed, “There was an airstrike conducted against the al Shabaab network on February 15 near Jilib, Somalia.” He added that the Pentagon was aware of reports that the “strike [was] alleged to have killed two civilians. We do not have any further information at this time about these reports, but we do take all claims of civilian casualties seriously.”
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has responded to the reports of their possible deaths, saying, “Cuba does not lose hope of finding them alive.” This development comes after Kenyan & Somalian authorities have reportedly attempted previous rescue attempts, which have failed.
