Hungary has entered into an agreement to acquire four Swedish Gripen fighter jets, a move that coincides with its anticipated approval of Sweden’s NATO membership.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated, “We not only keep our air defense capability but will increase it,” during a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. This deal is seen as a significant gesture of Hungary’s support for NATO and its operations, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s defense strategy.
Orban further elaborated on the importance of this acquisition for Hungary’s NATO commitments, saying, “This means our commitment to NATO will strengthen and so will our participation in NATO’s joint operations.” Kristersson expressed satisfaction with the discussions, stating, “The conversation has been constructive, and we have agreed to move forward in fields of common interests.”
This agreement comes as Hungary prepares to vote on Sweden’s NATO membership, resolving a significant diplomatic hurdle that delayed the process and affected Hungary’s international relationships.
