Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL) expressed concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “celebrating” as Congress adjourns for the holiday break without approving additional aid for Ukraine.

In a statement, Quigley stressed the urgency of supporting Ukraine upon Congress’s return in January. He said, “Congress is heading home without sending additional aid to Ukraine. Right now, Putin is celebrating. Once we return in January, we must ensure Ukraine has what it needs to win this war.”

This comes after the House adjourned after moving forward with an $886 billion Pentagon policy and funding package but without addressing the supplemental aid package for Ukraine. The issue of aid for Ukraine has been a point of contention among Republicans, with many opposing further aid without increased measures to secure the US southern border. However, Quigley argued that the US can support multiple fronts simultaneously, citing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s remarks on concurrently addressing different challenges.

Having adjourned for the weekend, the Senate plans to return Monday with hopes of reaching a border deal that could pave the way for additional Ukrainian aid before Christmas.
