Former President Trump has labeled his New York fraud trial, which started Monday, as the “single greatest witch hunt of all time.”
Arriving at court just before the initiation of the trial, Trump conveyed his grievances about the proceedings, targeting both the judge and prosecutors involved. “We have a rogue judge… We have a racist attorney general,” he told reporters, adding, “It’s a scam. It’s a sham. Just so you know my financial statements are phenomenal.”
The ongoing trial is centered on allegations that Trump and his businesses engaged in fraud for several decades.
Stemming from an extensive investigation, the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Trump, the Trump Organization, and his two adult sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. The lawsuit accuses the Trump Organization of manipulating the value of its assets to gain favorable tax and insurance terms. The state is seeking $250 million in penalties and aims to bar Trump and his children from holding leadership positions in New York companies.
Judge Arthur Engoron determined Trump’s liability for fraud last week, backing Attorney General James’s primary claims. This verdict jeopardizes some of Trump’s business licenses and puts his ownership of several high-profile properties at risk. Despite the judge’s ruling to continue with six remaining charges, Trump has consistently expressed disdain for both Engoron and James.
