Equatorial Guinea has abolished the death penalty following the president signing a new penal code into law.

Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue said in a statement posted on Facebook, “I am writing in capitals to seal this unique moment: ‘EQUATORIAL GUINEA HAS ABOLISHED THE DEATH PENALTY.”

According to the new measure signed by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the new measure will go into effect in 90 days. The new law was approved in advance by the country’s parliament, which approved it 99-1.
