President Donald Trump has publicly threatened Iran with renewed military action, warning that the “clock is ticking” as negotiations to permanently end the conflict between the two countries remain deadlocked.
Just to give you a recap: The US-Israeli war with Iran began on February 28 and lasted until April 8, when both sides reached a fragile Pakistan-brokered ceasefire that has been extended indefinitely. Throughout the war, Trump has used escalating rhetoric against Iran (including an April 7 post warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” which critics likened to a call for genocide), and has openly floated strikes on non-military Iranian targets like power grids and bridges, which legal scholars say would put the US in breach of the Geneva Convention. Since the ceasefire began, both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violations, and on April 13 the US launched a naval blockade against Iranian ports to squeeze Tehran into a US-favored deal.
Iran’s most recent peace proposal (per the semi-official Tasnim and Fars news agencies) demands an immediate end to the war on all fronts, including Israeli strikes on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, an end to the US naval blockade, lifting of US sanctions, unfreezing of Iranian assets, US compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. The US counter-proposal (also per Fars) reportedly demands that Iran keep only one nuclear site in operation, transfer 400 kilograms of its highly enriched uranium stockpile to the US, accept no war reparations, accept the release of less than 25% of its frozen assets, and agree that a halt to all fighting will only come if formal negotiations are held.
What’s going on now: Trump fired off a new threat to Iran in a short two-sentence Truth Social post Sunday morning. He wrote, “For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” The post followed a Saturday Truth Social post featuring an AI-generated image of Trump standing atop a US military ship with the caption “It was the calm before the storm,” along with several other AI-generated videos depicting Trump personally directing US military attacks on Iran.
Axios reported Sunday, citing two US officials, that Trump is expected to convene a Situation Room meeting Tuesday with his top national security advisers to specifically discuss options for renewed military action against Iran. Trump also held a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, per Netanyahu’s office. Netanyahu told reporters earlier that morning that he expected to hear “impressions” from Trump’s recent trip to China and that “there are certainly many possibilities, and we are prepared for every scenario.”
Iranian officials were pissed to say the least, with Maj. Gen. Mohsen Rezaei (a member of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council and a top military adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei) saying, “My advice to the US militarily is to back off before the Gulf of Oman turns into a graveyard for your ships. Otherwise, our understanding is that a naval blockade is an act of war, and responding to it is our natural right. If we’ve been patient until now, it doesn’t mean we have accepted it. The Strait of Hormuz is open to trade, but it will be closed to military buildups and any attempts to destabilize security.”
