The FBI has executed a search warrant at the Fulton County election office in Georgia as part of an ongoing investigation into issues related to the 2020 presidential election.
Some shit you should know before you dig in: In case you forgot, the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, particularly in Fulton County, became the epicenter of President Trump’s claims of voter fraud after he slightly lost the state to Joe Biden. Trump and his allies claimed that ballots were illegally counted, pulled from suitcases, and mishandled by election workers in an effort to sway the outcome. These allegations fueled numerous lawsuits, public hearings, and widespread distrust among Trump supporters. Despite these claims, multiple audits, recounts, and investigations, some led by Republican state officials, found no evidence of widespread fraud or irregularities. Trump was later criminally charged in Georgia, along with 18 others, and accused of orchestrating a conspiracy to overturn the state’s election results. The charges included racketeering, election fraud solicitation, and conspiracy-related offenses, centered around actions such as his phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger asking to “find” votes. However, the case was dismissed in November after a judge ruled that District Attorney Fani Willis had a conflict of interest due to a romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she appointed.
What’s going on now: In a notable development, the FBI has confirmed that agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operations Center in Union City, Georgia. Roughly 25 FBI personnel were involved in the unannounced operation, during which agents seized documents related to the 2020 election. County officials were not informed beforehand, and the FBI has remained tight-lipped about the specific target or scope of the search, stating only that it was part of an “ongoing investigation.”
The raid follows a renewed push by President Trump, who has continually insisted since his return to office that the 2020 election was stolen, specifically pointing to Fulton County as ground zero for alleged fraud. In recent months, Trump has publicly demanded federal investigations into what he calls “criminal conduct” during the Georgia vote count, arguing that Americans “deserve the truth.”
The Department of Justice has also been actively engaged. In December, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division filed a federal lawsuit against Fulton County’s court clerk, Che Alexander, for refusing to produce key election records from the 2020 race. The department claims Alexander violated the Civil Rights Act by failing to respond to a lawful request for documents, including ballots, ballot stubs, and digital envelope files.
This all comes as the Georgia State Election Board has pushed to reopen cases tied to alleged misconduct in the 2020 election. The board has issued multiple subpoenas for documents and tabulator tapes, some of which officials say are now missing.
