At least 11 people have died and many more are injured following a suicide bombing that targeted a political rally in Pakistan.

Getting into it: The blast occurred late Tuesday in the parking lot of Shahwani Stadium in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, shortly after a large political gathering organized by the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M). The rally was held to mark the anniversary of the death of Sardar Ataullah Mengal, the party’s founder and a former chief minister of the province.

According to government officials, the explosion took place as attendees were leaving the event. BNP-M leader Sardar Akhtar Mengal, who was present at the rally, confirmed on social media that he was unharmed.

Provincial authorities reported that at least 11 people were killed in the explosion, while 30 to 40 others were injured, several of them critically. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicions are likely to fall on separatist insurgents or militant groups known to operate in the region.

This all comes as the region experienced a surge in coordinated violence on the same day. In a separate incident near the Iranian border in Balochistan, five paramilitary personnel were killed and four others were injured when an IED struck their convoy. Meanwhile, in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, six soldiers were killed after a suicide bomber targeted a facility in Bannu.
