Ukraine has resumed strikes on Russian oil refineries after Russia began hitting Ukrainian power plants within hours of President Trump announcing an energy ceasefire over the weekend.

Getting into it: According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Ukraine launched “a massive attack” on an oil refinery in Ryazan, about 110 miles from Moscow, on Thursday. Local officials said the strike involved 69 drones and four Flamingo cruise missiles, and photos from the scene show the facility on fire. Ukraine also hit an airfield in Russia’s Voronezh region, where President Zelensky says Ukrainian forces struck four Su-34 fighter jets and damaged two others.

Ukraine says it held off on refinery strikes for three days after Trump’s announcement, but Russia kept hitting its power grid, and the Kremlin never said it agreed to the truce. Zelensky told the Financial Times that US officials had warned “if you will not stop [the strikes], we will block intelligence,” and this week Ukraine went without the usual US warnings ahead of several Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv. Trump has denied halting intelligence sharing. Zelensky also said Wednesday’s throttling of Ukraine’s military Starlink service “was not a technical problem, it was the will.” Ukraine’s envoy to the US says the service is now back to normal speeds, though Kyiv still hasn’t gotten an explanation from SpaceX or the Pentagon.

“The block [on attacking refineries] is out. We’re done,” Zelensky told the FT, adding that more Patriot air defense missiles from the US are the only thing that would get him to pause the strikes again.

This all comes after Russia fired more than 850 drones into Ukraine from Wednesday into Thursday morning, hitting 15 regions and killing three people in the Kirovohrad region. Zelensky said the attack came “precisely at a time when the speed of our defensive capabilities is being artificially restricted.”

Two Russian drones also crossed into Romanian airspace and hit two chemical tankers near where the Danube meets the Black Sea, setting both on fire, with at least seven crew members still unaccounted for.
