Kimberly Guilfoyle has resigned as US ambassador to Greece after the White House asked her to step down following weeks of reports alleging she promised a Trump donor a direct line to top administration officials if he paid her.

Getting into it: New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced Tuesday in her first briefing that the administration had “asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” and Guilfoyle posted her resignation on X shortly after. Trump said he hadn’t spoken to her, adding “I didn’t like what I read,” and noted she “wasn’t a member of my family” and only “dated my son a long time ago.”

The allegations began with Trump donor Eric Deters, who says Guilfoyle texted him shortly before her July 2025 Senate confirmation hearing asking for $100,000 to clear her American Express balance, and told him she’d be his “ride or die in Trump world” in return. The Wall Street Journal has also reported that she pushed the interests of a Greek energy and construction firm, brought the company’s lobbyist into closed-door diplomatic meetings, flew on private jets paid for by wealthy Greek businessmen and bragged at a reception that she could turn American power against the Greek government.

Her lawyers say Deters is the one in debt, owing her roughly $150,000 in unpaid speaking and consulting fees, that she followed State Department rules on travel, and that “asking a client to pay for work already done is not corruption.” CNN reports Guilfoyle spent the weekend insisting to allies that she was staying put, claiming she’d been promised she wouldn’t be fired.

In her resignation statement, Guilfoyle wrote, “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity. While my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end.”

Deters says he plans to sue Guilfoyle and her lawyers for defamation over claims that his texts were fake and that he was a “known blackmailer.” House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said “resigning does not shield her from accountability” and called for congressional oversight. The State Department’s inspector general is investigating Guilfoyle, though it’s unclear whether that probe will continue now that she’s out.

This all comes after Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly defended Guilfoyle as a “strong ambassador” during his trip to Athens last week, though sources tell CNN he privately pushed for her removal.
