President Trump says he is creating an “AI Force” and will soon name a new AI czar, even as some of the biggest names in the industry call for the technology’s development to slow down.
Getting into it: Trump announced the plan in a Truth Social post over the weekend, comparing it to the Space Force he created during his first term. He gave no details on what the new entity would do, whether it would be part of the military, how it would be funded, or when the czar would be named. He said his administration would not slow the industry down and would instead deal with bad actors through the existing criminal and civil court system.
In the post, he also repeated his claim that fears about AI are a “hoax” and predicted the technology could eventually make up as much as 25% of US GDP. He added, “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!”
This all comes after multiple warnings from inside the industry. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for companies to pace development and for independent third-party safety testing, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk both said they agreed with him. It also follows an Anthropic researcher’s warning that there’s better than a 1-in-10 chance AI “could kill all humans” in the next 10 years. Separately, Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton told lawmakers in a closed-door briefing this week that Congress has “maybe a year” to regulate the industry.
Trump’s former AI and crypto czar, venture capitalist David Sacks, left the job in March because special government employees can only serve for a limited time. He now leads the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and told CBS News the worry around AI is “becoming a panic.”
