The US military has carried out another heavy round of airstrikes on Iran in retaliation for a missile attack targeting American military forces in Jordan a day earlier.

Getting into it: In a statement, US Central Command confirmed the strikes began at 8 p.m. and ended two hours later, hitting dozens of IRGC targets inside Iran. The target list ran from command centers to the facilities where Iran builds its missiles and drones, and included coastal surveillance and defense installations as well as Iranian naval assets. CENTCOM called it “a powerful response” to Tuesday’s attacks and said the goal was to “further diminish threats posed by Iran and its proxies to American forces, commercial shipping, and neighboring Gulf countries.”

Trump had spent the day telegraphing what was coming. In an interview with Fox News, he said, “They’re going to get a beating,” adding that the US would “beat the fucking shit out of” Iran. Later, while speaking to reporters, Trump said, “We’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them. They know it’s coming. They’re asking us not to do it, but you know they tried shooting at us last night.”

This comes after the IRGC fired five ballistic missiles at US installations in Tuesday , which it framed as payback “in response to the acts of aggression of the American child-killing army.” CENTCOM said all missiles were intercepted. Iranian forces also went after three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz the same day, saying the ships blew past warnings and took what it called an “unsafe and illegal route” through the blockade.

The exchange follows Trump’s decision last Friday to suspend a 13-night bombing campaign to leave room for diplomacy, which he called “very friendly negotiations,” while Tehran insisted no such talks existed.
