Israel shared new intelligence with the US claiming that Iran cooked up a fresh plan to assassinate President Trump.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: It’s no secret that Iran has been seeking to take out Trump. This all really kicked off after Trump ordered the 2020 strike of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, in Baghdad during his first term. During the 2024 campaign, reports began to emerge that Iran was seeking to smuggle operatives and weapons into the US through the southern border, with security officials warning the Trump campaign that Iranian operatives inside the country had access to surface-to-air missiles, a threat serious enough that Trump’s team flew him on a decoy plane between events. That November, the DOJ charged a man over an alleged plot ordered by the IRGC to assassinate Trump. The threats have only intensified with the war between the countries this year, and the fragile 60-day ceasefire is now in tatters after the two sides resumed trading strikes this week, with Trump declaring the interim agreement with Iran “over” on Wednesday.

What’s going on now: According to the report, first published by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday and matched by CNN with two sources of its own, Israeli officials shared the intelligence with the US, describing what they viewed as a new threat against the president. One source told CNN the warning came last week, and another said that while the US has been tracking a “steady drumbeat” of chatter about potential assassination plans lately, Israel’s warning stood apart because it pointed to a specific, previously unknown plot. Two sources said the US had not vetted the intelligence itself and wasn’t tracking the plot before Israel flagged it.

Despite this, some US officials had a different take when speaking to CNN. According to their reporting, Israel may have passed along the intelligence to nudge Trump toward escalating against Iran at the exact moment he’s deciding whether to do so. One source went further, describing the report as one piece of a wider Israeli campaign to shape the president’s next move, and noted that parts of the US intelligence community treat Israeli reporting with built-in skepticism.

The context matters as Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have splintered in recent weeks over the war’s future, with Netanyahu pushing to keep up attacks while Trump has sought a way out, worried the conflict could tank the global economy.

The strain boiled over in a heated call where Trump reportedly called Netanyahu “crazy.” The two spoke again last week and agreed to continue “coordination between the countries,” per Netanyahu’s office, and Netanyahu is expected in Washington soon.
