Israel has killed Mohammed Odeh, the newly appointed head of Hamas’s armed wing in Gaza, in a strike just days after eliminating the man he had replaced.

Getting into it: The IDF and Shin Bet security service said Odeh was killed in a targeted strike Tuesday night in Gaza City, and Hamas confirmed his death the next day. He had only been named commander of the Qassam Brigades about a week earlier, stepping in after his predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, was killed in an Israeli strike on May 15.

According to Israel, Odeh served as Hamas’s military intelligence chief during the October 7, 2023, attack and was “one of the architects” of it. Sources close to Hamas figured he might’ve been the only one left alive from the armed wing’s top leadership council.

The strike itself, which Israel said followed months of surveillance tracking Odeh’s movements across a network of hideouts, hit an apartment building in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood as residents shopped ahead of the Eid al-Adha holiday. Odeh’s wife and son were killed alongside him, and Gaza health officials said at least three other people died and more than 20 were wounded.

Israeli leaders said the strike was part of a vow to hunt down everyone involved in October 7. Defense Minister Israel Katz, in a joint statement with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the commander had been “sent to meet his associates in the depths of hell,” adding that those who led the attack are “all marked for death, wherever they may be.”

Odeh joins a long list of senior Hamas figures Israel has killed since the war began, including former political chief Ismail Haniyeh, Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar, and armed-wing commanders Mohammed Deif and Mohammed Sinwar.

This all comes as Israeli strikes continue, killing at least 10 more people (including five children) in Gaza City later in the week, and follow attacks in Lebanon that left 31 dead.
