Peter Magyar is set to become Hungary’s next prime minister after his party crushed Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party in a landslide election.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: If you’re unaware, Viktor Orban has been a real thorn in the EU’s ass when it comes to Ukraine (primarily by blocking EU loan packages for Kyiv, watering down sanctions on Russia, and repeatedly vetoing European assistance efforts while framing Ukraine as a threat to Hungary rather than Russia). He’s used Hungary’s veto power inside the EU to single-handedly stall decisions that require unanimous agreement among member states, which has pissed off EU members at nearly every turn and given Putin a reliable ally sitting right in the heart of Europe. Despite this, Orban has built his base on a different pitch entirely by positioning himself as a defender of national sovereignty, traditional family values, and Western civilization against what he calls degenerate multicultural liberalism. That message has resonated with rural and older Hungarian voters, and earned him a cult following among some. Trump really pushed for Orban to win his reelection and sent Vice President JD Vance to campaign for him. Despite this, Transparency International ranks Hungary as the most corrupt country in the EU, and it became the first EU member ever to be downgraded from “free” to “partly free” by Freedom House.

What’s going on now: With nearly all precincts reporting, Magyar’s center-right Tisza party took 53.6% of the vote and 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament, giving him a two-thirds supermajority. Orban’s Fidesz party was left with just 55 seats and 37.8%.

Orban conceded less than three hours after polls closed, calling the result “clear” and “painful,” before vowing, “We are not giving up. Never, never, never.” Magyar told a crowd of thousands gathered along the River Danube, “We have done it. We have liberated Hungary and have taken back our country.”

The win carries major consequences beyond Hungary’s borders. With Magyar taking over, Ukraine can now hope to see Hungary lift its veto on the EU’s 90 billion euro loan package for Kyiv, and Brussels can expect a far more cooperative partner at the table when it comes to Russia sanctions and military support.

European leaders wasted no time reacting. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “Hungary has chosen Europe,” while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted in Hungarian, “Russians, go home!” As of now, Trump has not commented on the election results.
