Israel has kicked Spain out of a US-led coordination center overseeing the Gaza ceasefire.
Some shit you should know before you dig in: If you’re unaware, the United States created the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC), which is basically a US-led hub established as part of Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza. It brings together military personnel and diplomats from participating countries to work alongside the US and Israel on security and humanitarian issues in the Gaza Strip. Spain has been one of Israel’s most vocal critics in Europe since Israel launched its war in Gaza following the Hamas-led attack on October 7. Notably, Spain recognized the state of Palestine in 2024, banned military equipment sales to Israel, and permanently withdrew its ambassador to Israel last month due to repeated “insults and slanders” from Israeli officials, opposition to the US-Israel war on Iran, and Spain’s ongoing objection to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Israel had already recalled its own ambassador to Spain back in 2024 after Spain recognized Palestinian statehood.
What’s going on now: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Friday that Spain’s representatives were being removed from the CMCC. In a statement, Netanyahu said, “Spain has defamed our heroes, the soldiers of the IDF, the soldiers of the most moral army in the world. I do not intend to allow any country to wage a diplomatic war against us without paying an immediate price.” Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the move was carried out in coordination with the US and that Spain had been formally notified.
Sa’ar added, “The Sánchez government has such a blatant anti-Israel bias that it has lost all ability to serve as a helpful factor in implementing President Trump’s peace plan.”
This comes after Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned Israeli strikes on Lebanon and the broader Iran war, called on the EU to suspend its association agreement with Israel, and posted on X that Netanyahu’s “contempt for life and international law is intolerable.”
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares described the conflict as “the greatest assault on the civilization built upon the humanist ideals of reason, peace, understanding, and universal law.”
Spain’s opposition to the conflict with Iran has strained its relationship with the US, with some lawmakers calling for punitive action.
