The Israeli government has claimed that the man responsible for the vehicle attack on a Michigan synagogue was the brother of a Hezbollah commander recently killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: Last week, Ayman Muhammad Ghazali, a 41-year-old Lebanese-born naturalized US citizen, carried out an attack at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Authorities say Ghazali waited outside the synagogue for roughly two hours before driving a vehicle loaded with explosive materials into the building’s exterior area, where more than 100 children and staff were inside. According to US law enforcement, he was armed with a rifle and had commercial-grade fireworks and containers of flammable liquid in his truck; the materials ignited during the attack, causing smoke and chaos. Police said Ghazali exchanged gunfire with security officers before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The FBI described the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community” and is continuing to investigate the motive. Independent outlet Drop Site News also reported that members of Ghazali’s family had recently been killed in an Israeli airstrike overseas, a loss that local officials said may have preceded the attack.

What’s going on now: The Israeli government announced that the attacker’s brother, Ibrahim Muhammad Ghazali, was a Hezbollah commander killed in a recent Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. In a statement posted by the Israel Defense Forces, officials said Ibrahim Ghazali “was responsible for managing weapons operations within a specialized branch of the Badr Unit,” which the military said was involved in launching rocket attacks against Israel during the ongoing conflict. The IDF added that the unit was “responsible for launching hundreds of rockets toward Israeli civilians throughout the war.”

Israeli officials also directly linked the Michigan attacker to the Hezbollah commander. “His brother, Ayman Muhammad Ghazali, carried out the terror attack in Michigan this past Thursday,” the IDF wrote in the same statement.

As of now, there has been no comment from the FBI (which is leading the investigation).
