Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump have issued dueling statements to mark India’s 77th Republic Day.

Getting into it: In a statement, President Xi called India and China “good neighbours, friends and partners,” stressing that “the dragon and the elephant dancing together” is the right path forward for both nations. Xi also stressed the “great significance” of improving ties, arguing that strengthened China-India relations “align with the fundamental interests of both countries and their people, and are of great importance for maintaining and promoting world peace and prosperity.” Xi expressed hope that both nations would “expand exchanges and cooperation,” address each other’s concerns, and “promote the healthy and stable development of China-India relations.”

The tone of Xi’s message comes as both countries continue to deepen trade, which now tops $130 billion annually. It also comes amid mounting trade tensions driven by President Trump’s tariff policy, which has imposed a 50% duty on Indian exports and more than 30% on Chinese goods.

President Trump, meanwhile, offered his own Republic Day message, noting the historic bond between “the world’s oldest and largest democracies.” In a post shared by the US embassy, Trump said, “On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of India as you celebrate your 77th Republic Day.” He added, “The United States and India share a historic bond,” stressing their partnership in defense, energy, and technology.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed that message, stating the US-India relationship “delivers real results” and is vital to the Indo-Pacific region.
