German authorities have announced the arrest of three people believed to be plotting a terror attack on behalf of Hamas.

Getting into it: The men were arrested in Berlin during what investigators called a planned weapons handover. Authorities later identified them as a 44-year-old German national from Syria named Ahmad I., a 43-year-old man originally from Lebanon named Wael F. M., and a 36-year-old German citizen of Lebanese descent, Abed Al G. Prosecutors say the group had been working under Hamas direction since the summer and were tasked with obtaining guns and ammunition for attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets inside Germany.

The operation included search warrants in the cities of Leipzig and Oberhausen that were connected to the suspects. Anti-terror investigators had been monitoring the group before moving in to intercept the weapons exchange in Berlin, ensuring the weapons could not be used in a planned attack.

Prosecutors allege the suspects were acting as “foreign operatives of the terrorist organization Hamas” and had already succeeded in acquiring multiple weapons. During the arrests, police recovered “various weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle, several pistols, and a significant amount of ammunition,” according to the Office of the Federal Prosecutor General.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that the case represented “a threat of terrorism.” Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig added that “Jewish life in Germany is under threat. We all have a duty to protect Jewish life. That also means zero tolerance for anti-Semitism, under any circumstances.”

No comment from Hamas yet.
