The Department of Justice’s investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James has intenstified, with investigators convening a grand jury and issuing subpoenas over her high-profile fraud case against President Donald Trump and other litigation.

Getting into it: The grand jury is tasked with reviewing whether James’s civil fraud case against Trump (which resulted in a $454 million judgment) may have violated the president’s constitutional rights. In addition, it is also examining records from her separate litigation against the National Rifle Association. Fox News, citing unnamed sources, reported that federal prosecutors delivered two separate subpoenas to James’s office, each calling for extensive records connected to both the Trump and NRA cases.

Grand jurors will review collected evidence, hear from witnesses, and then decide whether the circumstances justify moving forward with criminal charges over alleged violations of Trump’s constitutional rights tied to James’s fraud case, as well as issues stemming from her litigation against the NRA.

This is not the only federal inquiry James faces. A separate investigation, overseen by Special Prosecutor Ed Martin, is scrutinizing her personal real estate transactions in Brooklyn and Virginia. That inquiry is focused on whether she altered property valuations or misstated mortgage information in ways that could have secured her more favorable loan conditions.

James’s office has characterized both investigations as politically motivated efforts to punish her for successfully prosecuting Trump and other powerful entities. Her spokeswoman said that, “Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American,” and vowed to defend her office’s litigation against both the Trump Organization and the NRA. James’s personal attorney, Abbe Lowell, has also called the DOJ probe “the most blatant and desperate example of this administration carrying out the president’s political retribution campaign,” and pledged to confront the allegations with “the facts and the law.”

Coincidentally, Lowell has represented former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez and Hunter Biden.
