President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, bringing an end to a 12-day conflict marked by strikes on both countries.
Getting into it: In an announcement on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the ceasefire would go into effect at midnight Eastern Time. According to Trump, the agreement was “fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran” and would involve each side halting hostilities in succession—first Iran for 12 hours, then Israel for the next 12—culminating in a full cessation of combat after 24 hours. Trump celebrated the agreement as a diplomatic victory, calling it a sign of “Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence” from both countries, and said that the war, which could have engulfed the Middle East, was stopped before reaching catastrophic levels.
The ceasefire was brokered through a coordinated diplomatic effort involving the US and Qatar. After Iran launched a retaliatory missile strike on the US Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar (an attack that resulted in no casualties due to successful interception by Qatari defenses), Trump reached out to Qatar’s Emir, informing him that Israel had agreed to halt hostilities. He requested Qatar’s assistance in securing Iran’s cooperation. This led to a call between Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and senior Iranian officials, where Iran ultimately agreed to the terms of the US-proposed truce.
Vice President Vance played a key role in executing the ceasefire strategy, coordinating directly with the Qatari Prime Minister to finalize the logistics of the deal.
Although Iranian state officials initially told CNN they had not received any formal proposal and intended to escalate retaliatory strikes, a senior Iranian official later confirmed to Reuters that they had accepted the ceasefire terms through Qatari mediation.
On the Israeli side, official confirmation was more reserved, but Minister Amichai Chikli posted a statement thanking Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu for what he called a “bold decision” that demonstrated “faith, courage, and moral clarity.”
