California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that he will file a lawsuit against the Trump administration over what he calls the unlawful federal deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles.

Some shit you should know before you read: Over the weekend, large-scale protests and riots broke out in LA following a series of federal immigration raids across the city, which targeted illegal immigrants that ICE claims were “criminal illegal aliens.” The raids, conducted without local coordination, sparked outrage in Latino-heavy communities and led to three days of escalating unrest. Rioters clashed with police, blocked major freeways, and set fire to self-driving vehicles, prompting law enforcement to respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and mass arrests. California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass, accused President Trump of deliberately provoking violence to justify the deployment of federal troops, calling it a manufactured crisis aimed at undermining state authority and stirring public fear. They also claimed that local law enforcement could handle the situation and that the National Guard was not necessary. To the contrary, President Trump accused California leadership of failing to act against lawlessness and vowed to restore “law and order” in Los Angeles.

What’s going on now: In a notable development, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration, condemning the president’s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles without state consent as both illegal and unconstitutional. In an interview with MSNBC, Governor Newsom argued that Trump’s actions violate Title 10 of the US Code, which stipulates that federal orders must be issued through state governors. In a public letter, Newsom demanded that the administration rescind the deployment, calling it a “serious breach of state sovereignty” and accusing the president of “creating the conditions” for violence in the city. He claimed that “Trump wants chaos and he’s instigated violence,” asking protesters to “stay peaceful. stay focused. [and] Don’t give [Trump] the excuse he’s looking for.

Over the weekend, at least 56 people were arrested in connection with the protests, including individuals accused of throwing Molotov cocktails, ramming officers with motorcycles, and looting during the riots.

Newsom’s legal challenge comes amid the continued escalation of federal involvement in Los Angeles. While 300 National Guard members are already deployed throughout the city, roughly 500 US Marines remain on standby, with US Northern Command confirming they are in a “prepared to deploy” status if further unrest occurs.

Trump reacts: In a statement, President Trump said, “We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California. If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated. The very incompetent “Governor,” Gavin Newscum, and “Mayor,” Karen Bass, should be saying, “THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU, SIR.” Instead, they choose to lie to the People of California and America by saying that we weren’t needed, and that these are “peaceful protests.” Just one look at the pictures and videos of the Violence and Destruction tells you all you have to know. We will always do what is needed to keep our Citizens SAFE, so we can, together, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
