General Motors has moved forward with a massive recall targeting nearly 600,000 full-size trucks and SUVs in the United States.

In an announcement, GM confirmed the recall of 597,630 full-size trucks and SUVs in the United States, citing a critical engine issue that could lead to abrupt failure. The recall affects select 2021–2024 models equipped with the L87 6.2-liter V8 gas engine, including the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, as well as the GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL. The issue stems from manufacturing defects in the crankshaft and/or connecting rod components, which can cause severe internal damage during driving.

The recall follows years of reported engine issues and a federal safety investigation that began in January 2025. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the agency launched its probe after receiving 39 complaints, eventually identifying widespread engine-related concerns tied to the L87 powertrain. GM’s internal investigation identified over 28,102 field complaints or incidents potentially tied to the engine defect between April 2021 and February 2025, including 14,332 alleging complete loss of propulsion. Despite these mounting reports, GM had previously closed three investigations into the issue between 2022 and 2024 without initiating a recall. The company did not formally acknowledge the defect or submit recall documents until April 2025.

Public scrutiny has grown over GM’s delayed action, particularly given the high volume of complaints and severity of the malfunctions. Many vehicle owners reported experiencing engine failure at low mileage (with many not even hitting the 25,000-mile mark), with some replacing engines multiple times.

Despite this, GM says that only about 3% of the recalled vehicles are expected to contain the defect, but the large number of complaints has sparked debate over the real failure rate and whether GM acted quickly enough.

In a statement to AP, GM said, “The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible.”
