The FBI has announced the arrest of two teenage girls accused of planning an attack at a High School in Houston, Texas.

What’s going on: According to the FBI, a 16-year-old student from Memorial High School and a 15-year-old student from Willis High School were detained after credible threats were identified on social media, suggesting they intended to use guns and pipe bombs in the attack. The FBI’s Threat Mitigation Team worked closely with the Houston Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Spring Branch ISD Police to locate and arrest the suspects within 30 minutes of receiving the tip. “We received troubling information, conducted a rapid investigation, shared our findings with trusted law enforcement partners, and ultimately saved lives,” the FBI’s Houston Office stated.

Although no weapons or bomb-making materials were immediately found, investigations are ongoing in both Harris and Montgomery Counties. The 16-year-old is charged with making a terroristic threat, a third-degree felony, while the 15-year-old remains in custody on unrelated charges.

Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Larry Baimbridge stressed the importance of swift action, saying, “This is a perfect example of state and federal law enforcement working together. I’m grateful to the FBI that got us information right away and we were able to act on it very quickly.”

FBI Houston spokesman Connor Hagan added, “This planned attack wouldn’t have been stopped without exceptionally close partnerships… This type of situation is exactly why the FBI exists.”
