Tucker Carlson, who has been the only American to sit down and interview Russian President Vladimir Putin since the war broke out in Ukraine, has claimed that the Biden administration attempted to assassinate Putin.
Some shit you should know before you read: Russian President Vladimir Putin is no stranger to assassination attempts, with many plots to kill him over the years, particularly since the war with Ukraine escalated in 2022. Ukrainian officials, including military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, have openly admitted to failed attempts on Putin’s life, citing them as part of efforts to disrupt Russian leadership amidst the war. The Kremlin has accused Ukraine, often with claims of US backing, of funding and orchestrating such attacks, including drone strikes and sabotage operations targeting high-profile events. These recent incidents add to a history of thwarted plots against Putin, such as attempts in 2002 during his visit to Azerbaijan, in 2012 before a presidential election, and in 2022 when a car bomb was reportedly planned along his route. Despite these efforts, Russian intelligence services claim to have consistently ensured Putin’s safety, describing the threats as “obvious” but well-contained.

What’s going on now: During an interview with journalist Matt Taibbi on his podcast The Tucker Carlson Show, Tucker Carlson claimed that the Biden administration attempted to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin, a statement he made without providing any evidence. He said, “The Biden administration did, they tried to kill Putin.” Taibbi interjected with skepticism, asking, “Really?” Carlson continued, “Yes, yes, they did, which is insane… That’s demented, that you would even think of something like that.”
Carlson speculated that the alleged attempt was part of a broader strategy of creating chaos, saying, “Chaos is a screen that protects them.” He questioned the logic behind such a move, adding, “I mean, I don’t know this. That’s just like watching what they’re doing. I’m like, ‘Why would they be doing that?'” He also raised concerns about the aftermath of Putin’s hypothetical removal, wondering aloud, “Who would take over Russia? Who’s in control of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world at that point?”

Kremlin chimes in: In response to Carlson’s claims, the Kremlin offered a vague statement, avoiding a direct confirmation or denial of the allegations. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, stated, “Russian intelligence agencies consistently take all necessary measures to ensure public safety and the security of those under state protection, especially the head of state.” While Peskov did not specifically address the accusation that the Biden administration attempted to assassinate Putin, the Kremlin has previously accused the US of funding Ukrainian operations aimed at destabilizing Russia, including alleged assassination plots.
