Denmark has announced a multibillion-dollar plan to bolster its military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic as President Trump continues to push to acquire Greenland.

Some shit you should know before you read: Over the last few weeks, President Trump has continued to advocate for acquiring Greenland. Trump argues that Greenland is important for US national security and protecting the “free world.” Trump has specifically raised concerns about Russian and Chinese naval activity in the region, which has picked up over the last few years. In addition, Greenland has an abundance of natural resources, including minerals essential for manufacturing technologies like electric vehicles and military equipment.

What’s going on now: In an announcement, Denmark revealed a $2.05 billion plan to enhance its military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic, focusing on addressing growing security challenges in the region. The plan includes acquiring three new Arctic naval vessels, two long-range drones capable of conducting extensive surveillance and expanded satellite capacity to improve monitoring and sovereignty enforcement. Additionally, Denmark will increase Arctic military training to better prepare personnel for the harsh conditions and strategic needs of the area.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said, “We must face the fact that there are serious challenges regarding security and defense in the Arctic and North Atlantic. For this reason, we must strengthen our presence in the region. That is the objective of this agreement, which paves the way for further initiatives already this year.” In addition, Denmark’s Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed that “Greenland is facing a changing security landscape,” which has necessitated the investment.

This all comes as President Trump continues to escalate his rhetoric about Denmark’s treatment of Greenland, claiming the semi-autonomous territory would be better off under US control. He has also criticized Denmark for what he views as inadequate investment in Greenland’s development and defense. Trump has even hinted at imposing tariffs on Denmark and has refused to rule out the use of military force to secure control over Greenland.
