Police departments across the country are beefing up their presence following two deadly New Year’s Day attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas.
Some shit you should know before you read: 2025 in the United States kicked off with two devastating New Year’s Day attacks that have shaken the nation. In New Orleans, a man with ties to ISIS drove a pickup truck through a crowded Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more. Authorities have identified the suspect as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a self-proclaimed ISIS supporter and army veteran. Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel, killing one person and injuring seven others. The perpetrator, a former Green Beret named Matthew Livelsberger, has left investigators baffled as police have yet to establish a clear motive for the act. Both incidents are being investigated by the FBI as terror attacks, with no confirmed links between the two at this time.
What’s going on now: In response to the attacks, law enforcement agencies across the United States have ramped up security measures to protect public spaces and reassure communities. In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams announced a heightened police presence at key locations, including Times Square and Trump Tower. The NYPD is also working closely with federal authorities to monitor developments and ensure the safety of its residents and visitors.
In Austin, Texas, the police department has increased patrols citywide as a proactive measure, even though there is no known threat to the community. Similarly, in Washington, DC, the Metropolitan Police Department has heightened its security posture ahead of significant January events, including a presidential inauguration and the arrival of new congressional members.
