Elon Musk has publicly supported Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, sparking backlash among some German lawmakers.
Some shit you should know before you read: Germany’s Alternative for Germany party (AfD) is a populist political group that emerged in 2013, initially as a Eurosceptic party opposing European Union bailouts during the Eurozone crisis. Over time, it shifted its focus to a broader platform centered on anti-immigration policies, national sovereignty, and cultural preservation. The party is known for its strong opposition to asylum policies, which it criticizes as overly permissive, and its calls for stricter border controls. The AfD has gained significant support in economically disadvantaged regions, particularly in former East Germany, where its rhetoric resonates with voters concerned about globalization and economic inequality. Critics associate the party with ethnonationalist and Islamophobic views, and its youth wing has been classified as “extremist” by German domestic intelligence.
What’s going on now: In a post on X, Elon Musk endorsed Germany’s AfD party, adding that “Only the AfD can save Germany.” His comment comes as Germany prepares for early elections in February, following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government. Musk’s endorsement amplifies the stakes in what promises to be a contentious election season, particularly as the AfD has gained momentum in opinion polls and positioned itself as a significant force, despite its isolation by mainstream parties.
Reactions from lawmakers: Following Musk’s endorsement, US Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said, “This is not normal. What Elon Musk thinks tends to eventually be what the president of the United States thinks. And if the United States takes an official position in favor of neo-Nazis in Germany, I mean, it is absolutely catastrophic.”
In addition, Alex Schaefer, a German lawmaker, called Musk’s endorsement unacceptable. He added, “We are very close to the Americans, but now bravery is required towards our friend. We object to interference in our election campaign.”
