First Lady Jill Biden and President-elect Donald Trump will join world leaders in Paris this weekend to celebrate the long-awaited reopening of the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral.

Let’s bring you up to speed: Back in 2019, a fire engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the most iconic symbols of Gothic architecture and French heritage. Constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, Notre Dame is admired for its stained-glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and iconic spire, which made it a wonder of medieval craftsmanship. The fire, believed to have started accidentally during restoration work on the roof, quickly spread, consuming the wooden framework known as “the forest” and causing the spire to collapse. While the main stone structure and much of its priceless relics, including the Crown of Thorns, were saved, the damage was extensive.

What’s going on now: The White House has confirmed that First Lady Jill Biden will attend as part of her broader overseas engagements. Joining her will be President-elect Donald Trump, making his first international trip since his re-election, alongside around 50 heads of state and government.

In a statement, President-Elect Trump said, “It is an honor to announce that I will be traveling to Paris, France, on Saturday to attend the reopening of the Magnificent and Historic Notre Dame Cathedral, which has been fully restored after a devastating fire five years ago. President Emmanuel Macron has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory, and even more so. It will be a very special day for all!”
