A Taiwanese state-funded broadcaster has removed a video in which a journalist referred to President-elect Donald Trump as a “felon.”
What’s the deal: The incident occurred when TaiwanPlus, a government-funded English-language broadcaster in Taiwan, aired a segment in which correspondent Louise Watt, reporting from Florida, referred to US President-elect Donald Trump as a “felon.” She said, “Well America looks like it’s chosen the felon.”
Government takes action: Taiwanese Culture Minister Li Yuan ordered TaiwanPlus to remove the video, describing the incident as “very serious.” Following his directive, TaiwanPlus complied, retracting the video and issuing a statement acknowledging it made a mistake. The Public Television Service Foundation, which oversees TaiwanPlus, announced that it would create a “self-discipline” committee to examine internal processes and strengthen editorial oversight.
Digging Deeper: This all comes as some Taiwanese officials had previously raised concerns about President-elect Donald Trump’s approach to Taiwan. During Trump’s campaign, he suggested that Taiwan should compensate the US for its defense support, challenging the established understanding of US-Taiwan relations. Additionally, he accused Taiwan of harming the US semiconductor industry, a critical issue given Taiwan’s leading role in global semiconductor manufacturing.
