California Governor Gavin Newsom has called a special legislative session to prepare the state for potential federal challenges under a new Trump administration.
What’s the deal: In an announcement, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a special legislative session set for December 2, focused on allocating resources to safeguard California’s progressive policies from potential federal rollbacks. The session will prioritize bolstering the state’s legal defenses, particularly through increased funding for the California Department of Justice, to prepare for litigation that could counteract federal actions impacting reproductive healthcare, climate initiatives, and protections for immigrant communities.
Newsom noted that this legislative effort would target any attempts by a new Trump administration to dismantle state-specific regulations on issues such as clean vehicle standards, disaster aid, and access to abortion medication.
What Newsom is saying: In a statement, Governor Newsom said, “The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle. We are prepared to fight in the courts, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”
What California’s Attorney General is saying: In a statement, Attorney General Rob Banta said, “No matter what the incoming Administration has in store, California will keep moving forward. We’ve been through this before, and we stand ready to defend your rights and protect California values.”
