A German-Iranian dissident with US residency, who was reportedly abducted in Dubai and taken to Iran, has been executed following a conviction on terrorism-related charges.

What’s the deal: Jamshid Sharmahd, a 69-year-old German citizen of Iranian descent who lived in Glendora, California, was executed by hanging in Iran after being convicted by the Iranian government of involvement in ‘terrorism-related activities.’ According to Iranian authorities, Sharmahd led the pro-monarchist group ‘Tondar,’ allegedly responsible for a 2008 bombing in Iran that killed 14 people and injured over 200.

Iranian officials also charged Sharmahd with planning additional attacks and disclosing classified information about Iranian missile sites. According to Iranian prosecutors, his public statements on television revealed details that compromised national security and were allegedly used by Western intelligence agencies to harm Iran. Sharmahd’s family has accused the Iranian government of fabricating these charges and stated that he has been subjected to torture.

How did he end up in Iranian custody?: Sharmahd was apprehended in 2020 after Iranian intelligence officials abducted him while he was waiting for a flight in Dubai. According to his family, Sharmahd was en route to India, with his travel plans disrupted by COVID-19, and had stopped in Dubai for a layover. Iranian authorities have not disclosed specific details about his capture but have noted that it was a “complex operation.”

The US and German governments have not commented on the news of his execution.
