Florida has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice, accusing the DOJ of interfering with the state’s investigation into the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course.
Let’s bring you up to speed: Back in September, Ryan Routh was arrested for allegedly attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Routh spent 12 hours near the perimeter of the course, armed with a rifle, while Trump was golfing about 400 yards away. A Secret Service agent spotted Routh hiding in bushes near a fence before he could fire any shots. After fleeing the scene, he was eventually apprehended by law enforcement. Routh, a strong supporter of Ukraine who had publicly criticized Trump’s stance on the war, now faces multiple charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
What’s going on now: In a lawsuit filed against the DOJ, Florida claims that the federal government is improperly obstructing the state’s investigation into Ryan Routh. Florida argues that the DOJ is misapplying a federal statute that allows it to suspend state investigations in cases involving crimes against high-profile public figures. The state also claims that this broad interpretation of the law violates the 10th Amendment, which reserves certain powers for the states.
In their filing, the Florida Attorney General’s office said, ‘In conversations with federal officials and in subsequent correspondence, these officials have made it clear that Florida may not conduct its own investigation, interview witnesses, or do anything other than cooperate with the federal government’s investigation.’
The DOJ has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
