Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has canceled his trip to Washington following an order from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

What’s the deal: According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s trip to Washington because he wanted to wait until after a phone call with President Biden. Netanyahu reportedly felt it was too early for Gallant to meet with US officials before Israel’s security cabinet had finalized its decisions on responding to Iran’s recent missile attacks.

The cancellation also came on the heels of reports that the relationship between Netanyahu and Biden has grown increasingly strained, with the two leaders not speaking for 50 days.

What the Pentagon is saying: In a statement, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said, “We were just informed that Minister Gallant will be postponing his trip to Washington, DC. Secretary Austin looks forward to seeing him soon.” She added, “We’re going to continue to engage the Israelis, whether it be here in person at the Pentagon, or over the phone again when it comes to their response.”
