A new report has revealed that the United States has spent $17.9 billion on military aid to Israel since the start of the Gaza war in 2023.
What’s the deal: The report, released by the Brown University Costs of War project, found that the United States has spent at least $17.9 billion on military aid to Israel since the Gaza war began in October 2023. Additionally, the report highlighted $4.86 billion in US expenditures for military operations in the Middle East aimed at deterring further hostilities and protecting regional shipping routes from Houthi attacks.
What the US provided: According to the report, the aid includes military financing, arms sales, and $4.4 billion in drawdowns from US stockpiles, delivering a wide range of weapons such as artillery shells, bunker-buster bombs, and precision-guided munitions. The US has also funded the replenishment of Israel’s missile defense systems, including the Iron Dome, and has provided jet fuel, ammunition, and rifles.
War’s death toll: The death toll in both Israel and Gaza following the October 7th Hamas attack varies depending on the source. According to the United Nations, Hamas killed over 1,200 people in Israel during the attack. Additionally, 723 Israeli soldiers have been killed in military operations since the attack.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 42,000 people have been killed in Gaza. While some dispute the figure, UN officials have said it is ‘likely’ accurate. The total includes both combatants and civilians, as the health ministry does not differentiate between the two.
